The Department of Defense created the Defense Task Force on Domestic Violence (DTFDV) in 1999 to help address the prevention and response to domestic violence within the military community.  Domestic violence destroys families, scars children, and ultimately affects military readiness.
 
The Miles Foundation is a private, non-profit organization providing, among other things, comprehensive services to victims of violence associated with the military, professional education and training to civilian community-based service providers and military personnel, and resources for policymakers, advocates, and journalists to ensure that public policy is well-informed and constructive.
 
The Foundation is responsible for the development of a coalition of organizations throughout the country and abroad fostering administrative and legislative initiatives to improve the military response.  The Foundation and its partners drafted Improving the US Armed Forces Response to Violence Against Women: Recommendations for Change.
