TRICARE Standard:  The Health Plan with Flexibility

Welcome to the 2009 edition of TRICARE Standard Health Matters—a newsletter containing the latest news and information about your TRICARE Standard coverage. This edition provides a wealth of information to help you take a more active role in your own health care and that of your family.

Staying Eligible

Your first responsibility is to make sure you and your family remain eligible for TRICARE. That means keeping your Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) information current (see “Stay Eligible: Keep DEERS Up to Date”). If you’re going to be eligible for Medicare soon, there are some steps you need to take to stay TRICARE-eligible (see “Transitioning from TRICARE Standard to TRICARE For Life ”).

Getting Care

Using TRICARE Standard is easy. There are no enrollment fees or forms to fill out. Simply visit any TRICARE-authorized facility, hospital, doctor or host nation provider (if overseas) whenever you need routine, urgent, emergency, specialty or preventive care. To learn more about accessing care while living overseas, look to “Using TRICARE Standard Overseas”.

If you’re unsure about how to choose a provider, see “TRICARE Provider Types: Which One Is Right for You?”. While you never need a referral, you may need to obtain prior authorization in order to be reimbursed by TRICARE (see “Referrals and Prior Authorizations: What Are They and When Are They Needed?”).

Look to “Filing TRICARE Standard Claims” for answers about the claims process and “Understanding How Other Health Insurance Works” for an explanation on how your TRICARE benefits work with your other health insurance.

In addition to the outstanding TRICARE medical programs, TRICARE offers world-class pharmacy and dental benefits for you and your family. Read all about them by visiting "Understanding the TRICARE Pharmacy Benefit" and "TRICARE Dental Benefits".
