People can be allergic to many things—dust mites, mold, pets, foods, plants, insect bites and even latex. What exactly is an allergy? According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, it’s an overreaction of the immune system to common, everyday substances. The most common reactions are mild like sneezing, a runny or stuffy nose, itchy and watery eyes, and headache. However, some allergic reactions like anaphylactic shock are severe and life-threatening.
Fortunately, there are some precautions you can take to keep allergies in check. If your allergies are serious enough to require treatment, TRICARE has you covered.
Allergy Triggers
You can take steps to avoid allergens that aggravate your symptoms:
-
Close home and car windows and use the air conditioner.
-
Stay indoors when pollen levels are highest—usually in the morning.
-
Shower and change your clothes frequently after spending time outside.
-
Dry your clothes in a dryer.
-
Avoid tobacco smoke.
-
Avoid mowing the lawn or wear a filter mask.
Allergy Treatment
If you can’t avoid contact with substances that trigger your allergies, talk to your doctor about your options, which may include treatment with antihistamines and decongestants.
Antihistamines can help relieve allergy symptoms by suppressing the production of histamine—a chemical that is produced naturally and causes allergy symptoms.
Decongestants can help relieve congestion and are often prescribed along with antihistamines.
TRICARE Coverage
TRICARE covers most services required in the diagnosis and treatment of allergies. However, certain types of allergy tests and treatments are not covered by TRICARE. Prior to having an allergy test or treatment, contact Humana Military Healthcare Services, Inc. at 1-800-444-5445 to verify if the test or treatment is an approved benefit.
If your primary care manager prescribes allergy medications for the treatment of your allergies, you can have them filled through the TRICARE pharmacy benefit. The TRICARE Mail Order Pharmacy program saves money by providing a 90-day supply of your medication for the cost of a 30-day supply at a retail pharmacy.
To switch from a retail pharmacy to the TRICARE Mail Order Pharmacy, call the Member Choice Center at 1-877-363-1433 or visit
Express Scripts. Your prescriptions will be delivered right to your door. Prescriptions may also be available through your military treatment facility.
