Notice of Privacy Practices


As a beneficiary in the Military Health System (MHS), you should know that individually identifiable health information is protected. This includes information such as your age; address; and past, present or future mental and physical health. As a requirement of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), you have the right to know how your protected health information (PHI) may be used, with whom it may be shared and how it will be protected.

PHI may be shared in the following cases:
  • When requested by you, except when a competent medical authority believes it would be harmful
  • To provide, coordinate or manage your care (e.g., with a pharmacist, specialist or laboratory)
  • To obtain payment for health care services
  • To support daily activities related to your care
  • When required by law
  • If you have a communicable disease that could spread to others
