Vaccines

What is a Vaccine?

A vaccine is a substance containing a dead or weakened part of a virus that causes infection. When you receive a vaccine, your body reacts to it by making protective substances called "antibodies". These antibodies protect you and help fight against infection. Vaccines expose you to viruses so you can be immunized against a disease without actually getting sick from it.

Why Should I Get a Vaccination?

Thanks to vaccines, some diseases have almost disappeared in the U.S.  Vaccines prevent disease in the people who receive them and protect individuals who come into contact with those who are not vaccinated.  It is better to prevent a disease from occurring in the first place, than to try and cure it later.

What Vaccines Do I need?

Recommended vaccines are based on your age and overall health.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) produce Vaccine Information Statements (VISs) that help explain both the benefits and risks of a vaccine.  Consult your doctor for recommended vaccines for you and your family.

Where Can I Get a Vaccination?

If you live near a post or base, check with the Military Treatment Facility (MTF) to see if they offer immunizations and vaccines.  If immunizations and vaccines are not available at the nearest MTF or you do not live near the post or base, please contact your primary care doctor for preventive immunizations and vaccines.
