Warrior Navigation
and Assistance Successes

- A retired wounded warrior needed assistance with a billing issue and was in jeopardy of being turned over to collections. Through coordinated efforts with the Health Care Navigator, the civilian provider and the Military Health Care System, the billing issue was resolved and the warrior’s account was settled and not turned over to a collection agency.
- A retired wounded warrior was showing ineligible for TRICARE Prime for a specified period and had incurred an enormous amount of debt for medical care. The Health Care Navigator was able to secure monies from a charitable organization that would assist with the fees associated with retroactive enrollment which subsequently resolved the debt for medical care.
- A wounded warrior had received an approved Line of Duty approved medical care and needed assistance with a billing issue. Through a coordination of efforts with various entities the Health Care Navigator was instrumental in a substantial cost savings to the warrior.
- A Community Based Warrior Transition Unit case manager contacted the Warrior Navigation and Assistance Program (WNAP) on December 24, requesting assistance in transporting a soldier via air ambulance from a short term general hospital to hospice to be near family. The soldier’s wish was to share his last Christmas with his family.
Through a collaboration of efforts an air ambulance provider was located who could transport the soldier on the same day. WNAP made arrangements for the soldier's transportation. The soldier arrived at the requested destination on Christmas Eve and was met by family members.
- The Nurse Navigator (NN) was contacted by a Warrior Transition Unit (WTU) case manager requesting assistance with coordinating care for a specialized surgical procedure that was to be performed overseas for a wounded warrior. The NN collaborated with the Managed Care Support Contractor for Overseas, the Military Health Care System, and the Veterans Affairs Health Care System and facilitated with the warrior’s transportation and access to medical care. The NN was also instrumental in the reimbursement process and subsequent post-operative rehabilitation at the Veteran Administration Hospital.
- A retired wounded warrior’s spouse was having difficulty accessing medical care for the veteran warrior. The Health Care Navigator played a vital part in providing education and guidance regarding the Veteran Affairs Health Care System, the Managed Care Support Contractor and other Government Health Care program. The HCN also put the spouse in touch with a Veteran Affairs social worker to coordinate continued access to medical care for the veteran warrior.
