Social Security Number Reduction

To protect your privacy and personal identity information, the DoD is removing Social Security Numbers (SSNs) from all ID cards. A DoD ID number and a unique DoD Benefits Number will be printed on the new cards.  A new ID card will be issued when your current card expires.

If you get care at a military treatment facility (MTF), you will need to provide your SSN if it’s not on your ID card. This is temporary until updates are made in the MTF health record system.

The removal of SSNs will occur in three phases:
Phase 1 In December 2008, the DoD began renewing dependent ID cards without the SSN printed on the front of the card.
Phase 2 Beginning May 2011, the DoD will begin issuing updated ID cards with imprinted DoD ID and Benefits Numbers as they are renewed.
Phase 3 By the end of 2012, the DoD will begin removing all SSNs from barcodes on all cards.

Note
:  Changes to cards will be made upon ID card renewal.
