Changes to Prime Service Areas (PSAs)
Beginning Oct. 1, 2013, TRICARE Prime will no longer be available to some beneficiaries living in areas outside of the Prime Service Areas (PSAs).
TRICARE Prime beneficiaries affected by the PSA reduction began receiving notification letters from TRICARE in February 2013 and more recently in August 2013. The first notification was done to allow time to learn about their options before the change takes effect in October. The second notification that was sent early in August was a reminder to make any necessary changes in status or PCM assignment before October 1, 2013. Notification letters went out to Prime retirees and families living outside a PSA and TRICARE Young Adults in the Prime program. Current TRICARE Prime coverage will remain in effect through September as long as enrollment fees are current. This change does not affect the TRICARE Pharmacy benefit.
The PSA reduction will have no impact on network providers. Current Prime beneficiaries whose PSA will change may choose to remain with their providers by transitioning to TRICARE Standard/TRICARE Extra.
Seeing TRICARE Standard/TRICARE Extra beneficiaries involves no drawbacks for network providers. Network providers file claims for TRICARE Standard/TRICARE Extra in the same way as for TRICARE Prime. More detailed information is provided in the Provider FAQs below.
