LOUISVILLE, KY — May 4, 2009— Humana Military Healthcare Services, a wholly owned subsidiary of Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM), and the TRICARE contractor for the South Region, announces its sponsorship of the inaugural Escarosa Independence Weekend held May 14-17, 2009 in Pensacola, Florida. Proceeds from the weekend’s events will go to the Independence Fund, a veteran run, charitable foundation supporting the nation’s disabled veterans through tools, therapies and guidance.
“This weekend is about recognizing the courageous men and women who have made sacrifices while serving our country and enhancing their lives through athletic and leisure activities,” said Dave Baker, president and CEO of Humana Military. “We are excited to be a part of the festivities supporting such a worthy cause.”
Numerous events are planned for the weekend including; a seminar led by a group of veterans, Red, White and Blue Gallery Night in downtown Pensacola, bicycle rally, motorcycle poker ride and 5K family walk. The festivities wrap up on Sunday with a concert by rising country music star, Stephen Cochran.
The Independence Fund is a nonprofit charitable foundation supporting America’s severely wounded veterans. The foundation’s mission is to provide veterans severely injured while serving in Afghanistan and Iraq, with tools, therapies, and guidance they might not otherwise receive, as well as fund and promote physical activities that enhance veterans physical and emotional well being. To date, the foundation has distributed nearly $700,000 in equipment grants and services for veterans.
