Preparing to Stay |
|
You should complete all readiness actions before conditions deteriorate too much. If a disaster threatens the region, one of the most important decisions you will make is whether to stay or go.
|
|
- Get your disaster kit out. Check food, water and medical supplies. Ensure you have flashlights, a radio and batteries. If you don't, go to the stores immediately.
- Put supplies in your safe room.
- Gather tools and repair materials.
- Fill containers with extra drinking water.
- Fill tubs with water for sanitary use after sealing the drain with a silicone caulking that can be easily removed later.
- Turn the refrigerator and freezer to the coldest settings.
- Place plastic bottles or freezer bags of water in both to eliminate air pockets and help increase the length of time foods will stay safe in power fails.
- Avoid opening the refrigerator/freezer, especially after power fails.
- Locate the shutoffs for electricity, water and gas.
- Bring in pets.
- Stay calm and remain indoors.
