Humana Military Healthcare Services appoints TRICARE South Region medical director

Physician and Air Force retiree a 37-year beneficiary of military health system

LOUISVILLE, KY — August 2, 2003 — Humana Military Healthcare Services, Inc. (HMHS), the Department of Defense (DoD) TRICARE South region health benefit services and support contractor, has appointed Dr. Jerry Muehlberger medical director in the San Antonio, Texas regional office.

In August 2003, HMHS was awarded the DoD contract to administer health benefit services and support to more than 2.7 million eligible TRICARE beneficiaries in the new South region, which encompasses the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.

As medical director, Muehlberger will provide medical management and consultation, oversee quality assurance and optimize medical resource utilization for the entire South region .

“Jerry joined Humana, Inc. as the Ft. Walton Beach, Florida market medical director in 1997,” said Dave Baker, HMHS president and CEO. “He brings not only medical management skills and experience to his new position but also a distinguished 30-year career as a pilot and a physician in the U.S. Air Force. His unique experience as both a beneficiary and administrator of the TRICARE program makes him an ideal choice for this position.”

“During my years in the Air Force, I had the privilege of providing medical care to the men, women and families of our military services,” said Muehlberger. “I am so pleased to have the opportunity to continue this special mission by working with the South region physicians and facilities who will deliver care on the front lines.”

Prior to accepting this position, Muehlberger was the medical director of the GulfCoast area of TRICARE Region 4, which encompassed the states of Alabama , Mississippi , Tennessee , the Florida Panhandle and the New Orleans area. He began operating in his new capacity on August 1, 2004 , when HMHS transitioned into the TRICARE South region in Alabama , Florida , Georgia , eastern Louisiana , Mississippi , South Carolina and Tennessee .

On November 1, 2004 , HMHS will begin health care delivery in the remaining South region states.
