Humana Military Healthcare Services appoints TRICARE South Region senior executive
Leader brings 38 years combined military and TRICARE health care management experience
LOUISVILLE, KY — August 2, 2004 — Humana Military Healthcare Services, Inc. (HMHS), the Department of Defense (DoD) TRICARE South region health benefit services and support contractor, has named Larry Burchfield senior executive in the San Antonio, Texas regional office.
In August 2003, HMHS was awarded the DoD contract to administer health benefit services and support to more than 2.7 million eligible TRICARE beneficiaries in the new South region, which encompasses the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.
As the South region senior executive, Burchfield will serve as the HMHS liaison to the DoD TRICARE Regional Office South in San Antonio. Burchfield also will provide executive management for all HMHS field operations, including military treatment facility optimization, Supplemental Health Care Program/TRICARE Prime Remote management and provider network development and maintenance.
“Larry joined HMHS as the executive director of GulfCoast operations in 1996,” said Dave Baker, HMHS president and CEO. “Having been with the company since our first year as a TRICARE contractor, he truly knows the program and our operational organization inside and out. His 26-year active duty career as a U.S. Air Force Medical Service Corps officer, including two tours as a medical treatment facility (MTF) commander, also makes him a TRICARE beneficiary, which gives him a unique perspective on how best to serve our very deserving military population.”
“As a lifelong beneficiary of the military health system, I’m delighted to have the opportunity to lead the TRICARE South Region operations for HMHS,” said Burchfield. “We consider it an honor to have served the active and retired military members and their families in the former Regions 3 and 4 states over the past eight years. We look forward to continuing to serve that population under the new South region contract, while adding the beneficiaries in the former Region 6 states on November 1, 2004.”
Prior to accepting this position, Burchfield was the regional executive director of the former TRICARE Region 4, which encompassed the states of Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, the Florida Panhandle and the New Orleans area. Burchfield also served as interim chief operating officer for HMHS for 10 months during 2002. He began operating in his new capacity on August 1, 2004, when HMHS transitioned into the TRICARE South region in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, eastern Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee.
On November 1, 2004, HMHS will begin health care delivery in the remaining South region states of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and western Louisiana.
