LOUISVILLE, KY — December 18, 2006 — Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) announced today that Humana Military Healthcare Services (HMHS) partnered with the United States Marine Corps Reserve in a toy drive for the annual Toys for Tots campaign for the 2006 holiday season. Toys were collected from employees in all HMHS offices and TRICARE Service Centers throughout an 11-state region, including the Corporate Headquarters in Louisville, KY.
"HMHS is proud to partner with the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation for this worthy cause,” said David J. Baker, president and CEO of HMHS. “As good corporate citizens and government partners, our employees were excited about the opportunity to once again support this year’s Toys for Tots campaign, and the military members they serve each day.”
HMHS associates collected nearly 1,350 toys and just over $7,000 in cash contributions during this year’s drive. Other drives are continuing throughout HMHS offices in the southern United States through this week.
In addition to the toy drive, HMHS was a main sponsor in this year’s Toys for Tots Kick-Off Luncheon in Washington, D.C., as well as a major sponsor for the Toys for Tots 5K Run in San Antonio, TX. This sponsorship allowed all entry fees to be used to purchase new toys for the children.
The holiday spirit continued with an additional effort to deliver toys and books to members of the states Guard and Reserve units in the South Region. In conjunction with the Armed Services YMCA in Washington, D.C., Mattel Toys and Gift in Kind, over 6,000 toys and books were dispersed to families who have loved ones serving over seas during this holiday season.
“It is wonderful to watch the giving spirit of our dedicated staff during this holiday season,” Baker said. “I would like to extend a special thank you to our partners in this project for their generosity. Working with our community leaders in making projects like this successful would warm anyone’s heart.”

About Toys for Tots
|
|
Toys for Tots began in 1947 when Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR and a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. The idea came from Bill's wife, Diane. In the fall of 1947, Diane handcrafted a Raggedy Ann doll and asked Bill to deliver the doll to an organization, which would give it to a needy child at Christmas. When Bill determined that no agency existed, Diane told Bill that he should start one. He did. The 1947 pilot project was so successful that the Marine Corps adopted Toys for Tots in 1948 and expanded it into a nationwide campaign. The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit charity and donations are tax deductible.
The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.
The primary goal of Toys for Tots is to deliver, through a shiny new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to needy youngsters that will motivate them to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders.
