Award Highlights Commitment to Case Management and Disease Management

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — September 6, 2007 —
Humana Military Healthcare Services (HMHS), a wholly owned subsidiary of Humana Inc., recently received URAC Accreditation for Disease Management – Asthma. URAC is a Washington, D.C.- based healthcare accrediting organization that establishes quality standards for the industry.

“HMHS takes great pride in delivering world-class health care services to our nation’s deserving military population,” said David J. Baker, HMHS president and CEO.  “National accreditation of our asthma disease management program underscores our commitment to providing quality service to our beneficiaries with unique health conditions.”

URAC’s Disease Management Accreditation standards ensure that appropriately trained clinical personnel implement a health assessment process, conduct assessments according to a standard process, and based on those results, implement interventions, employ evidence-based decision-support tools that are reviewed and updated annually and ensure that patients have telephonic access to its staff.  The standards support the physician or practitioner/patient relationship and plan of care by utilizing evidence-based guidelines and patient empowerment strategies and evaluating outcomes on an ongoing basis.

“We applaud Humana Military on achieving URAC Disease Management Accreditation,” said Alan P. Spielman, URAC president and CEO.  “In today’s healthcare market, URAC accreditation provides a mark of distinction for organizations to demonstrate their commitment to quality health care.”

Humana Military also has current URAC accreditation for Case Management, Disease Management – Heart Failure, Health Network, HIPAA Privacy, and Utilization Management.

URAC, an independent, nonprofit organization, is a leader in promoting health care quality through accreditation and certification programs.  URAC’s standards keep pace with the rapid changes in the healthcare system, and provide a mark of distinction for health care organizations to demonstrate their commitment to quality and accountability.  Through its broad-based governance structure and an inclusive standards development process, URAC ensures all stakeholders are represented in setting meaningful standards for the health care industry.  For more information, visit URAC's web site.
