Award Highlights Commitment to Case Management and Disease Management.

LOUISVILLE, KY  — August 15, 2006 — Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) announced today that Humana Military Healthcare Services (HMHS) has been awarded full Disease Management Accreditation and a full Case Management Accreditation from URAC, a Washington, D.C.- based health care accrediting organization that establishes quality standards for the health care industry.

“HMHS is committed to delivering exceptional health care services to our nation’s deserving military community,” said David J. Baker, HMHS president and CEO.  “National accreditation of our disease management and case management programs by the prestigious URAC organization underscores our determination to furnish industry-leading, compassionate TRICARE support to beneficiaries with unique health circumstances.”

URAC’s Case Management Accreditation standards include quality benchmarks for staff structure and organization, staff management and development, information management, quality improvement, oversight of delegated functions, organizational ethics and complaints.  URAC’s Disease Management Accreditation standards ensure that appropriately trained clinical personnel implement a health assessment process, conduct assessments according to a standard process, and based on those results, implement interventions, employ evidence-based decision-support tools that are reviewed and updated annually and ensure that patients have telephonic access to its staff.  The standards support the physician or practitioner/patient relationship and plan of care by utilizing evidence-based guidelines and patient empowerment strategies and evaluating outcomes on an ongoing basis.

“By applying for and receiving Case Management and Disease Management accreditation, Humana Military has demonstrated a commitment to quality health care,” said Charles Stellar, URAC Board Chairman.  “Quality health care is crucial to our nation’s welfare and it is important to have organizations that are willing to measure themselves against national standards.”

Humana Military also has current URAC accreditation for Network and Utilization Management.

URAC, an independent, nonprofit organization, is a leader in promoting health care quality through accreditation and certification programs.  URAC’s standards keep pace with the rapid changes in the health care system, and provide a mark of distinction for health care organizations to demonstrate their commitment to quality and accountability.  Through its broad-based governance structure and an inclusive standards development process, URAC ensures that all stakeholders are represented in setting meaningful standards for the health care industry.  For more information, visit the URAC Web site.
