Once your eligibility under TRS ends, you may be able to apply for temporary, transitional medical coverage under the Continued Health Care Benefit Program (CHCBP). CHCBP is a premium-based health care program and is similar to, but not part of, TRICARE. If you qualify, you must enroll yourself and your eligible family members in CHCBP within 30 days after termination of TRS coverage. Benefits under CHCBP are virtually the same as those under TRS. To find out if you are eligible for CHCBP, contact the program administrator, Humana Military, at 1-800-444-5445.
If a National Guard or Reserve member is covered by TRS on the day of his or her death, surviving family members may purchase or continue coverage for an additional six months beyond the date of the member’s death. The effective date of coverage is the day after the date of death. Surviving family members are responsible for paying applicable monthly premiums. Two scenarios apply depending on the type of coverage in effect at the time of the member’s death.
If TRS member-and-family coverage is in effect on the date of the member’s death, DEERS will automatically convert your TRS member-and-family coverage to TRS survivor coverage. DEERS will also establish an end date for eligibility six months from the date of the member’s death. Surviving family members will receive letters advising them of their coverage and their option to terminate, if desired.
If TRS member-only coverage is in effect on the date of the member’s death, the coverage will terminate effective on the date of death. Eligible family members may purchase TRS survivor coverage within 60 days after the date of death by submitting a TRS Request form. The request must be received by the TSC or Humana Military or postmarked no later than 60 days after the date of the member’s death. Surviving family members will receive letters advising them of their option to purchase coverage, as well as instructions for accessing the TRS Request form.
