LOUISVILLE, KY — September 8, 2008— Humana Military Healthcare Services (HMHS), a wholly owned subsidiary of Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM), proudly announces its sponsorship of the first annual Southlake Independence Weekend held September 11-13, 2008 in Southlake, Texas. Proceeds from the weekend’s events will go to the Independence Fund, a charitable foundation supporting our nation’s disabled veterans.
“HMHS is honored to be a part of this worthy event paying tribute to our nation’s veterans,” said Dave Baker, president and CEO of HMHS. “The Southlake Independence Weekend recognizes the brave men and women for their service to our country, as well as raises money to assist them in their transition back to civilian life.”
Several weekend events are planned and include a pre-game ceremony during Southlake Carroll High School’s Homecoming Game on September 12, the Patriot Pedal bicycle rally, and a concert performed by Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band on Saturday, September 13. The pre-game ceremony at Dragon Stadium will begin at 6:45 p.m. and pay tribute to our country’s wounded service members, including a flyover by two Army Apache helicopters. The bicycle rally will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday with 2,000 cyclists expected to ride alongside wounded service members being flown in from across the country to participate. The weekend will conclude with a Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band concert. Sinise, a longtime supporter of our nation’s military and service members, recently returned from Iraq where he performed as a part of the USO tour. Gates will open at 6 p.m. for the concert. Both events will take place at Southlake’s Dragon Stadium.
The Independence Fund is a nonprofit charitable foundation supporting America’s severely wounded veterans. The foundation’s mission is to provide veterans, who were severely injured while serving in Afghanistan and Iraq, with tools, therapies, and guidance they might not otherwise receive, as well as fund and promote physical activities that enhance veterans physical and emotional well being. To date, the foundation has distributed nearly $500,000 in the assistance of veterans.
