Background: The Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team are a group of young, athletic veterans and active duty service members with a mission to raise awareness, through exhibition and celebrity softball games, of the sacrifices and resilience of our military, and highlight their ability to rise above any challenge. Their goal is to show other amputees and the general population, that athletes through extensive rehabilitation and training, are able to express their desires and perform the sport they love.
In honor of our nation’s heroes, Humana Veterans will host the Wounded Warrior Amputee Team in Slugger Field’s Suite Nine as friends, family, and spectators alike come together for the Riverbats game against the Toledo Mud Hens. Immediately after the game, these heroes will play a three-inning exhibition game against the Louisville Metro Police and Fire team. Throwing the first pitch in Saturday’s Bats game against the Mud Hens is Josh Wege of Campbellsport, Wisconsin, a U.S. Marine who lost both of his legs below the knee during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
“Everyday our service members put their lives on the line to protect America,” said Tim McClain, president and CEO of Humana Veterans. “We are indeed moved and inspired by their personal stories and their mission raising amputee awareness that through adversity, they can still maintain their spirit and high quality of life. What a better way to salute these courageous men, especially through America’s favorite pastime,” McClain concluded.
